Collard Greens

This home recipe came from a long time childhood friend, Anita Spencer. These have to be the best collard greens I have ever tasted. It's a keeper in my home.

1 or 2 bundles of collards
1 box of chicken broth
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp baking soda
Smoked ham or fresh pork

Cut leaves down both sides of the stem, stem can be bitter. Wash good, soaking is better. Add broth, sugar, baking soda to a large pot. Add collards. After they become wilted add ham or fresh pork for extra flavor. Cook 30 minutes to an hour. Depends on how tender you like your veggies.

We haven't had collards in a long time. Lately we've been on a turnip green kick but it's time to go back to collards for a while. Thank you for sharing with us this week at Celebrate Your Story, and I hope your week is going great.

Hi Linda, I can see why this recipe is a keeper, it sounds good. Collard greens aren't something we get here, but maybe it would work well with savoy or spinach?

Thank you for linking up with #keepingitreal.

Collards are definitely a favorite here! I always cut the stem out too, some people don't and it can really make a huge difference. Thanks for sharing this with us at the Homestead Blog Hop!
