Bring on the Mums This Fall

When I see Mums I think the cooler weather is coming!
There are so many rich, golden warm colors to choose from. They add such a warm touch to any decor, inside or out.

How do you care for mums?

Set potted mums indoors near a window that receives bright, indirect sunlight all day, or place them outdoors where they can receive five hours of morning sunlight and afternoon shade.
Check the mums' soil moisture daily, and water the mums when the top 1 inch of soil begins to dry.

Do mums come back year after year?

Whether they come back the next year depends on when and where they are planted: Spring or summer – If planted in spring or summer, mums will have ample time toestablish a good root system. If the soil is not too wet during the winter, they will overwinter just as other perennials.

How do you cut back mums?

Pinch off spent flowers just under the fading heads to encourage your mums to continue blooming throughout fall. ...
Cut potted mums back to within 2 inches of the soil after they finish blooming.
Pinch back stems just under a leaf set in spring after the stems grow to be 4 to 6 inches tall.

Mom's Potato Salad

Mom's potato salad, she was famous for it. Simple ingredients, add to your taste.

1 1/2 pounds potatoes, cubed

1/4 cup finely chopped celery

2-3 hard cooked eggs, chopped

1/2 cup onion, minced

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1 tablespoon Yellow Mustartd

1 tablespoon sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

Spanish Olives (green)

Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and allow to cool completely.

In a large mixing bowl, combine cooled potatoes, celery, eggs, and onion.

In a smaller bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, Yellow mustard, sugar, salt, and pepper. Add mixture to the large mixing bowl.

Gently stir all of the ingredients until everything is coated and evenly mixed. Sprinkle the top of the potato salad with paprika and top here and there with Spanish Olives.

How do you make potato salad that catches the eye? Use red potatoes or other colored varieties! In addition to the bright green of fresh herbs, the beautiful red and purple of colored potatoes make any homemade potato salad stand above the rest. Southern Living

I went to a BBQ this weekend at some friends house and used my new Temptations serving dish. Everything looks so much nicer when it is served in a pretty bowl.

Southern-Style Baked Macaroni and Cheese

Creamy goodness. You pick the cheese.

1 (7 oz.) package or 2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni

8 oz. (2 cups) shredded sharp Cheddar or Swiss cheese

1 3/4 cups milk

3 eggs

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon dry mustard

Preheat oven to 350. Cook macaroni as package directs; drain. To hot macaroni, in same saucepan, add remaining ingredients except 1/2 cup cheese; mix well. Cook and stir over medium heat 3 to 5 minutes until cheese melts. Turn into greased 1 1/2 quart shallow baking dish or 9 x 5 inch loaf pan. Top with remaining cheese. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until bubbly. Refrigerate leftovers.

If loaf pan is used, bake 30 to 35 minutes.

Serves 6 to 8

I usually double this recipe.
